Our Story

Thunder Mountain Stables is a small equine operation located in Keymar, Maryland. Bob and Joy’s daughter, Keiko, loved horses from the time she was two years old and began taking lessons when she was four. Her passion for horses spread to Bob, who found joy in caring for the horses and even mucking stalls (I know, but it’s true). The family soon found themselves owning three horses: a registered Oldenburg xWelsh named Shadowfax, a purebred Morgan named Count, and a flea-bitten gray Arabian mix named Sidney.

In the fall of 2013 our family began looking for land, and in 2014, we finally settled on a 25 acre lot near the Catoctin Mountains. Construction of the barn began in June 2015, and, through the hard work of the whole family, was finished by September 2015.

Our children have since moved on to college life and we have reorganized to reduce the overall workload by switching to self-care pasture board only, a great option for those who want to save money and can afford a few hours per week to fill water and pitch hay.

We no longer offer outside lessons since our daughter is no longer available. However, many of our boarders have their own instructors that come here regularly.

While it's been a good deal of work, the experience has been truly rewarding and we have met and become close with so many horse enthusiasts in our local community. Thank you to all our customers!
